Why Build with Cloudflare in 2026?

Cloudflare brings application runtime, data services, inference, and AI traffic controls together on one developer platform.

A production AI application is a system of connected parts. It needs a place to run, a way to retrieve useful context, a model to reason or classify, and controls to understand how requests behave and what they cost. Cloudflare is building an AI-native developer platform around those needs, combining application infrastructure with services for data and model workloads.

One platform for the application

Cloudflare Workers provides the runtime for application logic and APIs. From there, developers can connect managed services that address common AI application needs:

  • Workers AI runs supported models through Cloudflare’s network.
  • Vectorize stores vector embeddings for similarity search and retrieval.
  • R2 stores documents, media, and other application objects.
  • AI Gateway adds a control and observability layer for AI requests.

Together, these services let teams build an AI workflow without treating every component as a separate platform decision. A Worker can receive a request, retrieve relevant context from a Vectorize index, read source material from R2, call a model, and return a response through the same application boundary.

Make AI operations visible

Prototypes often start with one model call. Production systems accumulate prompts, providers, retries, and traffic patterns. Without visibility, it becomes difficult to explain latency, investigate failures, or understand which workloads are driving spend.

AI Gateway provides analytics and logging, with features such as caching and security controls. These capabilities help teams monitor usage, manage costs, and apply consistent controls as AI traffic grows. When paired with Workers AI, it can provide a unified layer for observing model requests.

Add structured decisions with Clef

Large language models are useful when an application needs open-ended reasoning or generated text. Some steps need a narrower answer: choose a label, score an item, or select one action from an allowed set. Cloudflare’s Clef is a decision model hosted on Workers AI that returns schema-bounded structured choices with probabilities.

That makes Clef a potential fit for metadata tagging in a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline. For example, an application could classify incoming documents into a defined set of topics or sensitivity labels before indexing them. The application still owns validation and indexing; Clef supplies a structured decision that can become one step in that flow.

Clef can also support agent tool routing. An agent can gather context, then ask the decision model to select from an application-defined list of tools or route a request to the right workflow. Because outputs are constrained to the supplied schema, the application can handle the result consistently, apply confidence thresholds, or send uncertain cases to a person. This can improve routing consistency while keeping the application in control of what actions are allowed.

Clef complements general-purpose language models rather than replacing them. Use a generative model for tasks that need flexible reasoning and language; use a decision model where a workflow benefits from a bounded, typed choice.

Build for the full lifecycle

The value of an AI platform comes from how its pieces work together: deploying application code, keeping retrieval data organized, choosing the right model for each task, and monitoring requests in production. Cloudflare’s direction gives developers a connected set of building blocks for that lifecycle, from the first prototype through a system that has to operate reliably at scale.
